At Stoney Middleton CE Primary School, we take our responsibility to prepare our children for life in modern Britain, and the modern world, very seriously. We strive to ensure that fundamental British Values, Equality and Diversity are introduced, discussed and lived out through the ethos and work of the school.
We take seriously our duties to eliminate discrimination, promote equality of opportunity and foster good relations between people of all backgrounds. This duty is set out in the Equality Act of 2010, which covers sex, race, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation, gender reassignment and pregnancy or maternity.
We are committed to the development of cohesive communities within our schools and pour local, national and global neighbourhoods. All curriculum areas provide a vehicle for furthering understanding of these concepts and our RE, PSHE and Worship sessions provide excellent opportunities to deepen and develop understanding.
We make a conscious effort to ensure that children have exposure to a wide experience beyond their local community during which these concepts are shown, through for example, sporting events, visits and the use of outdoor education in order to provide opportunities to embrace:

To ensure a high level of understanding of difference and equality and to meet the needs of our LGBTQ community, both in and beyond school.
To ensure that our curriculum has content of particular reference to issues of equality.
To continually consider how well the school ensures equality of opportunity for all pupils and families.

All schools in The Woodland Federation have begun to take the next steps in developing the global citizens of tomorrow, developing understanding of equality, in a variety of ways.
We are currently in the process of working towards The Rights Respecting Schools Silver Award, after receiving out Bronze award at the end of 2021. This award demonstrates a school's commitment to putting children's rights at the heart of their actions, whilst teaching about the importance of equal opportunities for all children through the use of the UN Convention on Rights of the Child as a basis for actions.
In addition to The Rights of the Child, the school aims to ensure that all children have a clear understanding of UNICEFs Sustainable Development Goals, 17 goals with the power to transform our world for all.
